The overall goal of the NCD program is to reduce the burden of NCDs by promoting healthy lifestyles, reducing common risk factors, and providing integrated evidence-based, innovative, and cost-effective public health and clinical interventions

Cardiovascular diseases (CVD), chronic respiratory diseases (CRD), Cancer, Eye Health, and diabetes (DM) are the four major NCD initiatives being addressed in the ministry.


The following are key objectives of the NCD initiative:

Neglected Tropical Diseases (NTDs) Program

NTD

Neglected Tropical Diseases (NTDs) are a group of parasitic and bacterial diseases that cause substantial illness for more than one billion people globally. The Ministry of Health of Ethiopia has prioritized eight NTDs as diseases of public health significance. These include trachoma, soil-transmitted helminthes (STH), schistosomiasis; Lymphatic filariasis (LF), Onchocerciasis (Oncho), Dracunculiasis /Guineaworm is easing (GWD), Leishmaniasis, and Podoconiosis. Scabies has recently been added following recognition of it as NTD by WHO

Mental, Neurological and substance use Program

National mental, neurological and substance use health Program(NMNSP) is one of the programs under the Disease Prevention and Control Directorate is responsible for setting standards, developing and revising national guidelines, preparing national action plans including target setting, mobilizing resources necessary for capacity-building, monitoring, awareness creation, and evaluation, advocacy, and operational research, and for overseeing overall national coordination of health services and programs for mental health.
