The "MedEDAfrica 2026" international conference, which focused on modernizing medical education in Africa and was hosted by Ethiopia in Addis Ababa for the past three days, concluded today.
At the closing ceremony, State Minister of Health Sahrela Abdulahi stated that strengthening medical education and building the capacity of health professionals is crucial to improving the quality and safety of health services. She noted that Ethiopia is undertaking numerous activities to increase the quality of training and the accessibility of professionals.
Mrs. Sahrela explained that Ethiopia is strengthening its health system by implementing various programs to increase the number, accessibility, and training quality of health professionals. In addition, she announced that the country is supporting the region's health workforce development by training medical students from neighboring countries in its residency programs.
The President of MedEDAfrica, Professor Lionel Green-Thompson, expressed his gratitude to Ethiopia for its significant contribution to the success of the conference. He noted that valuable exchanges of experience were made regarding the challenges and solutions in the health education and training sector.
He also stated that the conference held in-depth discussions on continental strategies and ideas that will help produce competent health professionals at the African level, improve the quality of health services, and jointly strengthen the continent's health system.
Finally, recognition was given to those who contributed to the success of the conference. Following the conclusion of the program, participants toured the development works in Addis Ababa, including the Adwa Museum, the riverside projects, and the corridor development works.
