Ethiopia’s successful containment of the Marburg virus disease represents a major public health achievement, realized through strong leadership, rapid response, and coordinated action, according to His Excellency Tagese Chafo, Speaker of the House of Representatives of the Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia. He emphasized that this success is the result of close cooperation and integration among health policymakers, health professionals, and key stakeholders.
Minister of Health Dr. Mekdes Daba described the achievement as a landmark success in the history of Ethiopia’s health sector. She noted that the rapid response, coupled with effective community coordination, significantly minimized the potential impact of the virus.
Dr. Mekdes further stated that Ethiopia has officially been declared free of the Marburg virus in accordance with World Health Organization criteria, having recorded no new cases for 42 consecutive days. She said that this accomplishment demonstrates the country’s technical capacity and the availability of well-trained health professionals to manage public health threats. She also extended condolences to the families of those who lost their lives to the virus.
Minister of Health Dr. Dereje Duguma highlighted that the virus was defeated through a health policy focused on prevention and recovery, supported by the dedication and competence of health professionals. He underscored that unity and collective effort enable the country to overcome even the most challenging obstacles.
During a ceremony attended by members of parliament, regional presidents, representatives of partner organizations, and other stakeholders, individuals and institutions that contributed to the prevention and control of the virus were formally recognized and honored for their efforts.
