China provides over 4 million Birr worth anti-malaria medicine

Ababa, May 6, 2008 (Addis Ababa) - China has provided three million Birr worth medicinal drugs in donation to Ethiopia with a view to strengthening ongoing efforts aimed at preventing malaria. Chinese Ambassador to Ethiopia, Lin Lin handed over the donation here on Tuesday to State Minister of Health, Dr. Kebede Worku. Speaking at the handing over ceremony, the Ambassador said the relation between Ethiopia and China is being strengthened in all sectors.

UNAIDS governing board meeting closes in Chiang Mai

Board launches second independent evaluation of UNAIDS, addresses gender concernsin national AIDS responses and announces search process for new Executive DirectorChiang Mai, Thailand, 25 April 2008 – The governing body of the Joint United NationsProgramme on HIV/AIDS (UNAIDS) met in Chiang Mai from 23-25 April for the 22nd Meetingof the Programme Coordinating Board (PCB).At the meeting the United States of America took over from Thailand as the new chair, theboard appointed Ethiopia to act as vice chair, and Guatemala as rapporteur. This year’smeeting in Chiang Mai was attended by more than 300 participants and observers frommember states, international organisations, civil society and non-governmental organisations.The theme of the 22nd meeting of the PCB was TB/HIV and issues around the diagnosis and treatment of TB among people living with HIV and the need for closer collaboration between HIV and TB programmes were addressed.Taking priority on this year’s official agenda were; gender sensitivity of AIDS responses; asecond independent evaluation of UNAIDS; a follow up to the Global Task Team IndependentAssessment; and the process of nomination for a new Executive Director of UNAIDS.The PCB members also approved a new Memorandum of Understanding between UNAIDSand the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria which was revised in light of achanging environment to give a clear definition of the complementary roles of the twoorganisations.

Over 12 billion USD spent annually to prevent malaria

MOH/PR April 24, 2008 (Awassa) Ato Kare Chaweca SNNPR Health burro Head was speaking on Wednesday April 23, 2008 at a program organized to mark in Awassa Town, he said that in his region malaria fighting effort is successful. As a result the distribution of bed net is 100% including environmental protection & coartum treatment as an effect malaria epidemic was not registered for the last 3 years in the region.        

Dr. Laban Mascamba Representative of the African Union (AU) also said over 12 billion USD is spent annually to prevent malaria and provide medical treatment to malaria patients in Africa, Malaria causes some 24 per cent death rate on children below the age of five years.
