Over the past six years, more than 58 million people have access to quality health care, provided by primary health service.

Dr. Lia Tadesse

According to Dr. Lia Tadesse, Minister of Health, Pathfinder has been implementing projects in six regions and 451 woredas over the past six years with the support of the United States and the people and government of Korea.


Primary Health Care in Oromia, Amhara, SNNPR, Sidama, Southwest Ethiopia and Tigray Regional Health Bureaus and partner organizations, has been providing quality reproductive health, maternity, infant, adolescent and youth services and nutrition services have been implemented by the Ministry of Health in collaboration with USAID Transform PHCU, Dr. Lia Tadesse said.


According to Dr. Lia Tadesse, primary health care activities have been improved from health extension to Hospital level by interceding and arbitrating the system with the Health Sector Transformation Plan, in cooperation with   USAID Transform PHCU. 


She said the country has faced various challenges during the implementation of the primary health care project, but emergency response measures have been taken to prevent the problem from causing serious damage.


Services provided by health facilities have increased by more than 50 percent in the last six years, and the health insurance service has shown improvement, due to USAID Transform PHCU projects, has been mentioned on the occasion. 


Maternal and child health services in the regions where the project has been implemented have improved by 31 percent. According to Dr. Lia, the number of mothers giving birth in health facilities has increased by 11 percent.


She said more than 112,000 health professionals have been trained in primary health care over the past six years, by USAID Transform PHCU. 
Dr. Lia Tadesse called on the United States and the people of Korea to continue their support to strengthen the health sector in Ethiopia and improve the quality of service delivery.


The Minister, Dr. Lia Tadesse, thanked Pathfinder, who has made significant contributions to the primary health care project over the past six years, as well as JSI, Compass, Wealth Associates, Malaria Consortium and Ethiopian Midwives Association, who participated in the project.


At the forum, the key activities of the partner organizations were presented in the form of speeches. Kebeles, Woredas, Zones and Regions testified that they had benefited from the Primary Health Care Project by USAID Transform PHCU.
