The team provided $430,000 in medical equipment and training to conduct voluntary neurosurgery at Jimma University Medical Center, Zewditu Memorial Hospital, and Black Lion Hospital.
This partnership demonstrates the potential of Ethiopian diaspora expertise and international cooperation, said Health Minister Dr. Mekdes Daba; and called for continued support to strengthen neurosurgery and stroke care in Ethiopia.
One of the key achievements of the volunteer doctors’ team is the training of professionals, with neurosurgeons from the Davis University of California, in the United States performing surgeries and training Ethiopian doctors, said Dr. Daniel Hambisa, coordinator of the volunteer team.
Ethiopian nurses and doctors have received advanced neurosurgical care training; high-tech automation services have been provided to Jimma University Medical Center, Zewditu Memorial Hospital, and Black Lion Hospital; Axon Stroke Center has provided free surgical services to patients; and pediatric neurosurgery and epilepsy patients have been aided.
The collaboration between the Ethiopian diaspora and the Ministry of Health has been described as improving brain and neurosurgical services in Ethiopia; increasing the training of local doctors with world-class expertise; and the donated equipment and free surgical services are saving patients’ lives.
