Breastfeeding week is being celebrated for the 30th time in the world and for the 14th time in our country under the theme "Convenient conditions for breastfeeding mothers, let's teach, support!!" It was celebrated with the mothers and children in the shelter of displaced persons at Woyeneshete camp in Debre Birhan.

According to the coordinator of the national nutritional program of the Ministry of Health, Mrs. Hiwot Darsene, mothers breastfeed their children for six months only, which will help them to maintain their health and allow them to develop properly. She said that the national interest regarding breastfeeding is also high.

She reminded the mothers that they should not stop giving breast milk to their children even if they are in an uncomfortable situation and fathers, family members and the community should pay attention to breastfeeding mothers.

Representatives of the region and partner organizations were present at the ceremony and two mothers shared their experiences of breastfeeding and explained to the gathered mothers the benefits of exclusive breastfeeding for up to six months.

Breastfeeding Week is being celebrated from July 25th to August 1st to encourage all stakeholders, government, private institutions and partner organizations as well as the community to protect, promote and support breastfeeding during the Covid epidemic, man-made and natural disasters.
