Strengthening our country's health system it is important to work harder to prevent and control domestic and cross-border diseases.


Today at the Ethiopian Institute of Public Health (EIPH) a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) has been signed among the Ethiopian Ministry of Health (MoH) and European Union (EU) and the Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD) in East Africa, on the delivery of various ambulances and equipment to the Ethiopian Ministry of Health. UNOPS coordinated the event to support the health system of Ethiopia and neighboring countries and CVD-19 response. Speaking on the occasion Minister Dr. Lia Tadesse emphasized that better health can only be achieved by building a better health system.


The Ethiopian Institute of Public Health and other stakeholders are working to reduce the risk of CVD-19 and other pandemics by conducting various in-country and border surveys, as well as raising awareness of the health needs of border crossing communities to protect themselves and the community from various diseases. 


Minister Dr. Lia Tadesse thanked the European Union (EU) and other EU partners for their financial support, noting that efforts to strengthen the health system in the border area will play an important role in strengthening and developing cross-border health research.


Speaking on the occasion, Dr. Workeneh Gebeyu, Secretary General of the Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD) in East Africa, said the Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD) is working hard to support and strengthen the health systems of all IGAD member states.


He further said that aid and assistance will be provided to all IGAD member states to enhance connectivity and cooperation. On this occasion, he thanked the European Union, which has always been a partner.
The Ambassador of the European Union to Ethiopia, Ronald Kobe, expressed his gratitude for the immunization program and said that the support will continue.


On her part, Worknesh Mekonnen, Director of UNESCO Ethiopia and African Union Commissioner, thanked for the agreement and assistance and said that future cooperation will continue.


Three ambulances, one state-of-the-art mobile laboratory and other medical equipment were handed over to help the Ethiopian health system. A tripartite memorandum of understanding (MoU) has been signed between the Ethiopian Ministry of Health and the Ministry of Health of Djibouti and the Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD) on cross-border vaccination between the Ethiopian and Djibouti governments.


A Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was also signed among East African Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD), the Ministry of Health, Gondar University and Jijiga University to collaborate on public health awareness development and research. The Ethiopian government has been provided over 1.7 million birr through the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between the Ministry of Health and the Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD) on Food and Drug Control. This is a health-related project coordinated by the Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD) in East Africa; the project will strengthen cooperation between the countries; with the support of donor organizations, strengthening the health sector through the control of cross-border diseases is expected to be a multifaceted response.
