East African countries must work together to prevent and control TB

A side discussion on TB prevention and control was held with representatives of neighboring countries attending the 16th Annual TB Research Conference.


It is important for countries to work together, as TB is difficult to treat and monitor because neighboring countries have similar communities, especially in pastoral areas of East Africa. 


Delegates recalled that the lack of information on the situation in neighboring areas and the current situation that resources are limited; It said it is important to carry out research activities, strengthen cooperation and raise awareness among senior officials and work together on the nature of media and communication platforms.


It is stated that a special working group will be formed to work together with each other in this special side discussion which will be led by the Track Secretariat.


Representatives of Ethiopia, Eritrea, Kenya, Somaliland and South Sudan, as well as representatives from the African CDC, UNICEF, the World Health Organization, the Ministry of Health, the Armoire Hansen Research Institute, the Public Health Institute and the Track Secretariat had attended the discussion. Representatives of the countries agreed to work together to prevent and control TB.

At the same time, side discussions and more than 43 research papers were presented. According to Taye Leta, Deputy Director of the Disease Prevention and Control Directorate at the Ministry of Health, the studies contribute to the prevention and control of tuberculosis, as most of them focus on TB disease and related complications.


It is important to intensify the ongoing research on the prevention and control of TB. He said various research projects on TB in Ethiopia have played a significant role in preventing the spread of TB.


According to Taye Leta, this year's research focuses on sustainable solutions to TB.
